New technologies and motivation in sports coaching with Étienne Dubois - #Introduction

Why do my clients procrastinate their health?

As you may have guessed, the concept of motivation is central to the coaching of your clients. Without motivation, there is no training. In this episode, we guide you on how to take advantage of technology to increase your clients' motivation.

"Motivation is the act of getting things done and having the energy to accomplish a task. It is the opposite of procrastination.

The gains to be made from physical activity

There are gains to physical activity and everyone knows it. So why aren't they doing it?

Often, these benefits are long term and multi-month goals. They are abstract gains that are hard to compare. So it's hard to hold on to, since it's not instantaneous. This is one of the hardest issues to counter in a fitness or athletic setting.

Some gains to physical activity:

  • Improves self-esteem
  • Fight against social isolation
  • Reduces stress
  • Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Reduces the risk of diabetes
  • Increases good cholesterol

Where is the professional in this context?

Your role has two main tasks:

  • To properly define your client's primary goal and sub-goals.
  • To adapt your client's plan in parallel with his progress.

And what about the impact of technology?

For the past few years, there are tons of mobile apps and smartwatches that address the need for training.

These giants of the field are coming more and more and they continue to grow. However, this omnipresence of technology remains unpredictable and that is why you need to position yourself today in relation to the evolution.

How can technology help you?

By collecting automatic data.

At times, your client will feel the need to change their environment and find new ways to move. This implies a challenge in terms of physical and daily data collection, since you will not always be at his side. It will be difficult to be able to see an evolution.

Use technology to your advantage: recommend that your client connect their smart devices to harvest live training data from anywhere.

This technology can also be useful in collecting related data through forms sent to the client or in setting up the training program. You will be able to ask them about their habits, what they do during the week, their stress level, etc.

Through the visual presentation of progress

When you can't see the progress visually, it's hard to stay motivated... The client needs to compare the "before" and "after" as well as to see the evolution of his efforts. We are therefore potentially talking about graphs that we share with the client to explain everything.

By reminding customers at the right time

How do we do this? With the sending of documents, which are linked to alerts.

It's important to have alerts so that we know when the client has a drop in motivation. Often, the alerts are linked to objectives that are going in the wrong direction: a weight gain alert in a weight loss objective for example.

By managing a larger volume

Our time is limited in a day... Technology allows us to access information quickly and have everything you need to know centralized in one place, for example with a software like Hexfit allows it.

"You can save up to 41 minutes per client per week with Hexfit!"

Use a tool to enable optimal follow-up of your customer

A software like Hexfit allows you to better follow your client's evolution and to optimize your coaching, both in person and remotely.

With several key features:

  •  Periodization and planning of your clients' long-term goals.
